About the event
Join us for a walking tour of a hidden corner of one of our best-known Detroit parks as we explore one of the island's hiking trails in pursuit of native flora - right in the city's center.
From the rare and unusual to the relatively commonplace (but still lovely), Belle Isle has been under transformation since the exotic European Fallow Deer were restricted from wide access on the island in 2003, allowing the native flora to thrive. In the intervening years, the island has fallen under the aegis of state agencies and non-profits have taken on restoration projects, resulting in nesting bald eagles and the sighting of native beaver.
Our walk will take us into an area of significant transition over the past two decades, due to the effects of the emerald ashborer and oak wilt on the canopy. (This is not a tour of the Oudolf Garden.)
Dress for the weather, including possible standing water. Meet on Vista Dr., at the parking lot near the racquetball courts (see map below).
If you have difficulty finding the event on the day, call (313) 690-3385.
One third of all proceeds from this event will be donated to the Wildflower Association of Michigan to support its programs. No dogs please.
